Vehicle Overview

We are excited to present this 1960 Porsche 356 B 1600 California ‘Barn Find’.

An all numbers matching discovery out of Central California, which was stored in a hot and dry climate and indoors for many years.

This is a 1960 Porsche 356 B 1600 ‘Normal’.

VIN #: 108970

Engine #: 600122

Build date: September 30, 1959

According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the original color is Condor Yellow, which was a non-standard special-order color, over black leatherette interior. Wearing its original black California license plate, front and rear, with registration running through July of 2020 – this is a truly special California 356.

Documented as the 52nd 356 B produced and the 2nd oldest 356B listed in the Porsche 356 Registry database. The #600122 engine number indicates that it was the 22nd 1600 ‘Normal’ B engine built.

When acquired by the current owner, the car was cosmetically in pieces. The car has been brought back to running condition as evident by our walk around video and test drive. The car is primarily rust free and all around very solid, making it an excellent candidate for full restoration.

Photographs of the internal body stampings were taken and included in our gallery, showing ‘970’ on the hood and other body parts.

ONLY ORIGINAL ONCE

Originality is the key to this car with many superior qualities such as its original factory battery box floor and tank, date stamped (8/59) gas tank, factory floors & undercoating, longitudinals, and its original transmission. The factory doors, hood and decklid gaps are refreshingly excellent.

Hood has never been ‘kinked’ and all original Sigla brand glass installed. Also installed are the early factory wire mesh style air cleaners and the shroud still wears its original factory black paint.

Tires are Goodyear G-Metric radials and are dated from the 1990's, which are currently not roadworthy. Original hubcaps have been lost through the years and now wearing aftermarket “Super” style crested caps. Wears 8/58 date stamped 4 1/2 factory chrome rims, again, with light surface rust.

Car is presented with its original glovebox and antenna keys, factory owner’s manual and ashtray, and a Period correct Blaupunkt radio included.

HISTORY
Verbal records state that the car was most likely painted in the late 1980’s to bare metal with the windows out. Currently finished in a dull and thinly painted medium metallic blue with the water based clear coat that has failed over most surfaces.

Luckily, the dash was sanded but not taken to bare metal, so its blue paint was carefully removed to reveal the original Condor Yellow factory paint.

All lights – headlights, turn signals, reverse and brake are intact and functional. The interior is complete with what appears to be the original headliner intact, sun visors, carpet and seats – all displaying wonderful patina.

Transmission shifts smoothly and noiselessly, even downshifting into 1st from 2nd whilst moving. Engine shows some sputtering cold and even at operating temperature, which would need to be further investigated.
