Vehicle Overview

1958 Porsche 356A 1600S Cabriolet w/Hardtop

This 1958 Porsche 356A cabriolet was completed on August 27, 1958, and is said to have been sold new to a US servicemember in England. The selling dealer states that it resided with the previous owner for 29 years before the current owner purchased it in 2014. The car is finished in Ruby Red over a beige interior, and power is provided by a numbers-matching 1600S flat-four paired with a numbers-matching four-speed manual transaxle. Factory options and equipment include a black removable hardtop, bumper overriders, 15? Rudge center-locking wheels, dual front-seat headrests, dual turn signal switches, and front lap belts. This 356A cabriolet is now offered on dealer consignment in California with a copy of its Kardex, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a Porsche Production Specifications certificate, a Karosserie Reutter build file, two driver’s manuals, a tool kit, a pair of black California license plates, and a clean Arizona title.

The Reutter-built body was reportedly refinished in its factory Rubinrot (R 702) in 2019, at which time the selling dealer states that one of the lower jack points was repaired. Features include sealed beam headlamps, front fog lights, chrome bumper overriders front and rear, and dual exhaust tips exiting through the rear bumper guards. Originally silver, the factory removable hardtop has been refinished in black, and maintenance in 2020 included refitting and replacing the hardtop and soft top seals.

Factory 15? Rudge center-locking wheels are wrapped in reproduction 5.00L-15 Dunlop Racing tires, and braking is handled by four-wheel hydraulic drums. The the brake master cylinder and reservoir were replaced in 2020.

The cabin features low-back bucket seats upholstered in beige leather, optional headrests, matching door panels, beige square-weave carpets, and a beige dash pad. Factory options and equipment include dual turn signal switches, a day/night rear-view mirror, sun visors with a passenger vanity mirror, beige lap belts for both front seats, and leather rear luggage straps. The Becker Europa push-button radio features AM and FM bands.

The wood-rimmed VDM steering wheel frames VDO green-letter instrumentation consisting of a 6k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, and gauges for oil temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 37k miles, approximately 2,500 of which were added by the current owner. True mileage is unknown.

The 1,582cc air-cooled flat-four features dual Zenith downdraft carburetors and was factory rated at 74 horsepower in 1600S specification. Maintenance in 2020 included cleaning the carburetors, replacing the valve cover gaskets, adjusting the valves, and rebuilding the fuel pump.

The engine stamp reads P*82455*, which matches the engine number noted on the Kardex, the Porsche Production Specifications certificate, and the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle stamped with the identification number 21161, which matches the transmission number listed on the Kardex and other documents. The selling dealer states that one of the jack points was repaired at the time of the repaint, and service in 2020 included a replacement clutch kit and new transaxle mounts.

The Porsche Production Specifications certificate lists factory options and identification numbers, and shows a production completion date of August 27, 1958. A Porsche Certificate of Authenticity is also included in the sale as shown in the gallery.

The Kardex lists the powertrain numbers, early warranty work, and delivery in England to its first California-based owner.

The Reutter build file details the original colors and interior materials, which are displayed on the color sample card above. Additional items that accompany the car include a copy of a Porsche spare parts catalog, two driver’s manuals, Reutter literature, a pair of black California license plates, German automobile club badges, a tool kit, and two copies of 356 Club Magazine.
