We are pleased to offer this 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230SL out of our Monterey showroom. Presented in Papyrus White over black interior, powered by a replacement 2.3-liter inline-six and matched with a four-speed automatic transmission. Known for their iconic removeable Pagoda hardtop, in matching white paint, this 230SL also sports US style headlights, chrome brightwork and its original white 2-spoke steering wheel.
Sold new by Stahl Motor Company in Monterey, California, and acquired in 2006 from the original owner, where it's lived in Pebble Beach ever since. Offered with a clean California title, a factory data card, tool roll, matching spare tire, service booklets and Mercedes-Benz manufactures literature.
The SL sports stock 14? steel wheels wear body-color hubcaps with chrome beauty rings over GT Radial Champiro 75 tires. Paintwork in the correct Papyrus White (717) color was done during current ownership. Glass is factory in the rear quarters and on the hardtop with the Sekurit stampings clearly seen. The door glass and windshield are replacement, with some pitting and imperfections.
Chrome bumpers were redone during the current ownership and still benefit from the quality work. Trim and brightwork throughout the body are tight with minimal pitting, scratching or oxidation. The hardtop fits nicely as well and was easily removed and put back on during the photoshoot and detailing. Photos of paint meter readings can be viewed as well as imperfections around the car in the detailed photo gallery.
The interior features low-back bucket seats upholstered in black vinyl along which also matches the door panels, carpeting and dashpad throughout the cabin. We note that the carpets were replaced with the correct German weave in 2007 and that the removed factory radio accompanies the car in the sale.
Other interior highlights include the factory wood trim, lap belts, a patina’s steering wheel in white and its original radio. Minor wear and tear on the dash pad, a puncture on the headliner and common patina is present and highlighted in our gallery.
The odometer currently shows 44,343 miles with around 12k-miles accumulated by the current ownership, although the true mileage is unknown. Instruments are original and in working order such as the 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, vertical gauges for fuel level, oil pressure and coolant temperature. There is no convertible top.
Engine Bay, Trunk & Underside
We do know through the VIN plate and Data Card that the motor in the car currently is a replacement 2.3-liter M127 inline-six. A photo of the engine block stamping is provided in the gallery. Also comes equipped with the standard Bosch mechanical fuel injection system and power steering.
Recent service as of April 2021 included changing the oil and replacing the spark plugs and a new battery as of December of 2021. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission which shifts smoothly at all speeds. The engine bay itself is tidy with a nice firewall pad and correct hoses and hardware throughout.
Underside shows and features twin exhaust finishers out the rear of the ca, minimal surface rust or oil leaks.
All inspections welcome. We ship worldwide.
