Vehicle Overview

Ended on Bring a Trailer Auctions : 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback K-Code 4-Speed

This 1965 Ford Mustang is a K-code fastback that was special-ordered new via North Brothers G.C. of Garden City, Michigan by Thomas Land, the senior designer at Ford responsible for the fastback body style. The car received a special gray paint color, a unique grille, Fairlane door handles for the black interior, and finned Cobra valve covers from the factory. The 289ci V8 is paired with a four-speed manual transmission, and other equipment includes 15? wheels, multi-piston front brake calipers, a folding rear seat, a center console, Rally-Pac gauges, and an AM radio. Service has included brake work, rebuilding the carburetor, a valve adjustment, a tune-up, and replacing the fuel tank, alternator, and battery. The current owner acquired the car in 2016. This Mustang is now offered on dealer consignment with a letter from Land, an owner’s manual, and a “salvaged” California title.

The car is said to have been special-ordered in Metallic Grey Mist, a color said to have been offered for the contemporary Lincoln Continental. The car features a unique grille designed by Land and fabricated by Ford Design Center shops. The exterior has been refinished, and the paintwork and exterior trim are shown up close in the photo gallery below.

The handling package was optioned when new. Gray five-spoke 15? wheels wear American Racing center caps and are mounted with 205/60 Definity HP100 tires. The front axle is equipped with red multi-piston brake calipers, and the selling dealer states that the calipers have been rebuilt and the front pads, rear shoes, and brake lines have been replaced.

The black interior features bucket seats with Deluxe-style covers and a folding rear bench. The doors utilize woodgrain-trimmed Fairlane door handles, and wood trim also accents the console, gauge cluster, and glovebox door. An AM radio is mounted in the center of the dashboard, and the heater core has been replaced.

A three-spoke steering wheel frames instrumentation that includes a 140-mph speedometer flanked by four auxiliary gauges. A Rally-Pac with a tachometer and an analog clock is mounted to the steering column. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 1,300 miles; true mileage is unknown.

K-code Mustangs received a high-performance 289ci V8 with a four-barrel carburetor. Output was rated for 271 horsepower and 312 lb-ft of torque when new, and features on this example include finned-aluminum Cobra valve covers, a solid throttle linkage, and a manually operated choke. The selling dealer states that service has included rebuilding the carburetor, adjusting the valves, setting the timing, recoring the radiator, and replacing the coolant hoses, distributor cap, ignition points, drive belt, fuel tank, fuel lines, alternator, and battery.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. Additional photos of the underside are presented in the gallery.
