Vehicle Overview

Euro 1972 BMW 3.0CS 5-Speed

This 1972 BMW 3.0CS was delivered new to a customer in Europe before being imported to the United States in 1987, when it was sold by Alan BMW Saab in Edmonds, Washington. The car later spent time in Oregon until it was relocated to Texas and then California, where the current owner purchased it in 2015. Refinished in red over black, the car is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six with triple Weber carburetors. Equipment includes a five-speed manual transmission, 14? alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, a power sunroof, wood interior trim, VDO gauges, a CD player, and an aftermarket air-conditioning unit. Service since 2020 has included recharging the air conditioning, changing the oil, and replacing the tie rods as well as the spark plugs. This E9 is now offered on dealer consignment with manufacturer’s literature, a service booklet, sales paperwork from 1987, service records from current ownership, a removed Becker radio, and a clean California title.

The car was delivered new in Verona (024), which was one of four colors available on the early carbureted 3.0CS models. Under previous ownership the car was refinished, and the seller notes a scratch located on the driver-side rear quarter panel as well as an ill-fitting sunroof seal.

Cast-alloy 14? wheels wear chrome BMW roundel hubcaps and are mounted with 205/70 Michelin Defender tires. Each corner is equipped with disc brakes. The tie rods were replaced in 2020.

The interior features black leather upholstery on the bolstered front bucket seats and the contoured rear bench. Wood trim accents the dash and console, and a CD player has been mounted in the center stack. A cruise-control unit has also been added, but it is inoperable.

A wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel sits ahead of VDO instrumentation that includes a 240-km/h speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, a clock, and a combination gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 62k kilometers (~39k miles), approximately 2,500 of which have been added under current ownership. True mileage is unknown.

An aftermarket air-conditioning unit has been installed in the trunk, with vents located on the rear shelf. The air-conditioning system was recharged with R134a refrigerant in 2020.

The 3.0-liter inline-six is equipped with a trio of Weber side-draft carburetors. An Optima red-top battery has been installed. In 2018 the expansion tank and some coolant hoses were replaced, and the coolant was changed. In 2020 the fuel-filler neck was replaced. In 2021 the spark plugs were replaced after a damaged plug was discovered and others were loose, and the oil was changed at that time.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, which was installed in place of the original automatic transmission under prior ownership. Seepage and corrosion are visible in the underside photos, more of which are provided in the gallery below. Receipts indicate that the engine and transmission mounts have collapsed.

Various manuals and records will accompany the car along with sales paperwork from 1987. Included touch-up paint has a handwritten label reading 314, which corresponds to later-model Hellrot.
